I usually buy a bit more ingredients than I need and so I decided to put a few of these grains together for a mix-and-match beer.<\/p>\n<p>I also wanted to use some of the Nugget hops I&#8217;d collected from this year&#8217;s hop harvest. Unfortunately, I don&#8217;t know what the exact IBUs are for the hops so I can only blindly guess at the final bitterness of the beer once it&#8217;s finished. This is the first year that I&#8217;ve grown Nugget hops so I&#8217;m expecting that the IBUs will be a bit low.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the Franken-Rye P.A. recipe:<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt id=\"Franken-Rye P.A.\"><strong>Franken-Rye P.A.<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>BJCP Category: 14B (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjcp.org\/2008styles\/style14.php#1b\" title=\" 14B. American IPA \">American IPA<\/a>)<\/dd>\n<dt><em>Ingredients<\/em><\/dt>\n<dd>2 lb Rye malt<\/dd>\n<dd>2 lb American 2-row malt<\/dd>\n<dd>1 1\/2 lb Carapils<\/dd>\n<dd>8 oz Crystal 60deg;L<\/dd>\n<dd>4 oz Crystal 90deg;L<\/dd>\n<dd>3 lb Muntons Extra Light DME (60)<\/dd>\n<dd>1 lb clover honey (10)<\/dd>\n<dt><em>Boil Additions<\/em><\/dt>\n<dd>1 oz Nugget (~10% IBUs?, 60)<\/dd>\n<dd>0.8 oz Nugget (~10% IBUs?, 10)<\/dd>\n<dd>1 tsp Irish moss (10)<\/dd>\n<dd>1 oz Nugget (~10% IBUs?, secondary)<\/dd>\n<dt><em>Yeast<\/em><\/dt>\n<dd>1 Activator package <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wyeastlab.com\/rw_yeaststrain_detail.cfm?ID=5\" title=\" Wyeast 1056 (American Ale) \">Wyeast 1056 (American Ale)<\/a><\/dd>\n<dt><em>Original Gravity<\/em>: 1.068<\/dt>\n<dt><em>Estimated Final Gravity<\/em>: 1.016<\/dt>\n<dt><em>Alcohol<\/em>: 5.35% (ABW), 6.85% (ABV)<\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Since my mashtun is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homebrewtalk.com\/wiki\/index.php\/Converting_a_cooler_to_a_mash_tun#How_to_make_a_cheap_10_or_5_gallon_MLT_with_a_Rubbermaid_Cooler.\" title=\" Home Brewing Wiki: How to make a cheap 10 or 5 gallon MLT with a Rubbermaid Cooler. \">a converted 2 gallon cooler<\/a>, I had to split my grains into two batches and do 2 different mash\/sparge cycles. This didn&#8217;t turn out to be too hard although it was pretty time-consuming (especially when considering the fact that I did a 90 minute boil, as well).<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt>Mash Cycle (repeat process for each batch of grains)<\/dt>\n<dd>140&deg;F for 60 minutes<\/dd>\n<dd>150&deg;F for 30 minutes<\/dd>\n<dd>2 gallon sparge at 170&deg;F<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Despite the lengthy, convoluted brewing process, everything went off without a hitch (as opposed to <a href=\"http:\/\/anthurian.com\/76\/how-a-brew-day-goes-horribly-wrong\/\" title=\" Anthurian: How a Brew Day Goes Horribly Wrong \">another brew day in the recent past<\/a>). After a week fermenting at about 60-62&deg;F, there is still steady activity and bubbling in the airlock.
