Weird Musings: Evolution and Endangered Species
Posted on 17 September 2010
While watching TV the other night, the host of a video clip show quipped that pandas have now evolved to become so cute that humans can’t help but go “awwwww” when they see them. This got me wondering: are animals in captivity, especially endangered species which are being bred, evolving to become almost entirely reliant upon humans and zoos? At some point in the future, will they evolve to the point where they no longer represent an accurate genetic representation of their wild progenitors? Will we end up with new species of animal that are completely accustomed to living in zoos or game preserves which are genetically distinct?
